Howdy everyone,
I have been working on some method to cut down on or eliminate the hacking in Outlaws. My latest idea has to do with the .chk files already in the game. Here is my idea, could we include known hack files in the items that the .chk files look for so it could block a person using those files in games? You know how when someone types in a cheat there is a message saying that person is cheating, maybe we could do the same thing only it would do that when it found the compromising files in someone's game. Another thought I had was what if when it found the files in question, it would be like the person had lit a lantern so that everyone could see something was different? I am not sure how all this works, but I am tossing it out there and hoping that someone who has better insight into this could take it and run with it. I anxiously look forward to your replies, Thank you!

Howdy Hooter. Wish I had something to contribute here, but I have only a vague notion of how hacks work .... just never bothered to find out more.
Nevertheless, (just thinkin' out loud here), it seems to me that the most effective solution would be a patch to the OLWIN.EXE that would automatically delete or rename any stray NWX files in the OL folder. You'd need to find a savvy programmer somewhere, but this would eliminate the need to modify every existing map. The hitch would be that the modification would also have to recognize a player with the old unmodified program, and block that player. I have no idea if something like this would work with the shell programs that are utilized after joining a game, someone who really knows the ins and outs of it would have to write the patch for all the possible cheats.
Like I said, this ain't my field, so I may be suggesting the impossible. Just makes sense to me as a way to preserve all the old maps and still leave the hackers stranded ..... fix the program, not the maps.

Good thinking Dog! That is why I post here so that we can share ideas and perhaps accomplish things! I thought your ideas were valid and if a patch could fix the game instead of the map then we wouldnt have to remake all the old maps. That was an idea I had not considered. But I am not as concerned about it blocking this type player as I would like for it to just identify them for me. Then I can avoid playing with such person. But lets leave it on the drawing board and see who picks up the chalk next. Thanks for your reply Dog

The simplest fix would be a patch that stops Alt-Tab from working in the game lobby. The CHK routine runs prior to entering the lobby. The hacker tabs to desktop, runs a script that switches various files, then clicks back in. Then all he has to do is switch characters to reload the hacked files. This would not stop the preexiting NWX hacks. Those could be fixed with NWX files being checked by the CHK in addition to ITMs. Just putting them in the CHK doesn't work. I've long thought that the number strings in front of each file name contain the key that could make this happen. I've sent a couple of EMails to LA about them. Never heard squat. Need more? Post.

Hooter I have a sneaky idea as per your particular angle on this. Could be implemented right away. Can't talk about it in public. Only a Scorpio (me) would think of it lol. I'll explain it in an email later on today when I'm up to speed.
